For many gamers, nothing bothers and worries like an overheating laptop. Yet nearly every laptop that I have tried in the past has ended up warming up like a furnace, forcing me to stop gaming for fear of having my laptop damaged. This begs the question; do all gaming laptops overheat? I recently researched this and learned that actually not all of them do.

Why Some Gaming Laptops Experience the Overheating Problem

Most gaming laptops overheat due to the manner in which their central processing units (CPU) and graphics processing units (GPU) are designed. For example, last year, HP recalled several models of their gaming laptops due to poor CPU and GPU designs that were causing the devices to overheat when running a game. Other minor culprits of the overheating problem include a clogged up fun, dusty or blocked intake grills & exhaust ports, as well as diminished thermal grease(thermal compound) between the GPU or CPU and the heat sink,

How to Fix the Overheating Problem for Your Gaming Laptop

Unfortunately, these high-end gaming laptops are not cheap, making them only available to a certain class of buyers. Good news is you can use a few basic methods to prevent your laptop from overheating.

For example, wiping dust, dirt and other particles off your intake grills, exhaust ports and fans regularly will improve the airflow within your laptop, preventing overheating. So is replacing your thermal paste after every few years, like three years or so. You may also complement your fan with an external fan and cooling pads to make it more effective.

Final Thoughts

Not all gaming laptops have overheating problems, though I would admit that most laptops do, including the one that I own currently. Good news is you can use the simple methods above to prevent your laptop from becoming too hot whenever you are gaming. Personally, my laptop stopped overheating when I started cleaning the intake grills, exhaust ports every two weeks. Besides routine care, investing in an external fan has also gone a long way in my case.
